About the Artist

Kumi Usui is a Japanese-born artist who graduated from Musashino Art University in Tokyo and the Sichuan Art Institute in China. She currently lives and works in Chongqing, Sichuan. Usui’s conceptual practice centres on everyday life and emotions, primarily involving acrylic on paper, mixed media painting, and installation. In her ongoing series I’m Drawing & Drawing, she attempts to return to a pure state by blurring the boundary between art and life through the creation of aimless, meditative paintings. Her work questions the meaning of drawing, the truth of life, and the connotation of self.
