About the Gallery

Portas Vilaseca, established in Rio de Janeiro in 2010 by Jaime Portas Vilaseca, is a pivotal gallery dedicated to nurturing emerging artists within the Latin American contemporary art landscape. Evolving from its origins in a traditional framing shop, it swiftly became a nexus for experimental practices and critical discourse led by independent artists and curators. Relocating in 2018 to a three-story house in Botafogo, the gallery now offers a dynamic exhibition program. While the ground floor presents a classic layout, the upper levels are dedicated to innovative projects that engage with the unique architectural environment. Portas Vilaseca's curatorial vision prioritizes practices that fuse poetic experimentation with urgent contemporary themes, including anti-racism, LGBTQIA+ issues, the climate crisis, and the intersection of art and new technologies. The gallery's roster provides a diverse perspective on contemporary art from Latin America, and it actively collaborates with institutions and independent spaces. Portas Vilaseca has significantly expanded its international presence, participating in prestigious art fairs such as Art Basel (Miami), Frieze (London), and ARCO (Madrid and Lisbon). Its represented artists frequently feature in major international biennials, including the São Paulo Biennial and the Venice Biennale, and their works are acquired by renowned global institutions.
