About the Gallery
James Cohan Gallery, established in 1999 on West 57th Street, relocated to Chelsea in 2002. Known for its diverse programming, including solo shows and two annual thematic group exhibitions, the gallery operated a Shanghai location from 2008-2015, fostering cultural exchange between American, European, and Chinese artists. In 2015, a second New York space opened on Grand Street, enabling more focused and experimental exhibitions. Over the past five years, the gallery has expanded its roster with artists like Firelei Báez and Kathy Butterly, reinforcing its commitment to artists who explore the intersection of physical and ideological place, re-imagining contemporary human experience through historical engagement, materiality, and process.
