About the Gallery
Established in Johannesburg in 1966, Goodman Gallery is one of the world’s longest-standing international contemporary art galleries. Founded during apartheid as a non-discriminatory space in opposition to the autocratic government, the gallery has consistently championed social transformation through art. Under Liza Essers’ directorship since 2008, Goodman Gallery has expanded globally, introducing pivotal curatorial initiatives and fostering partnerships. Its program emphasizes artists from southern Africa, the broader African continent, and international creators engaging with the African context, often extending beyond traditional gallery spaces to create unconventional and thought-provoking interventions.
