About the Artist
Robert Rehfeldt (1931-1993) was a pivotal figure in the East German underground art scene and an internationally recognized pioneer of Mail Art. Operating largely outside official state-sanctioned art institutions during the GDR era, Rehfeldt utilized the postal system as a primary medium, fostering an extensive global network of artistic exchange and communication. His prolific output encompassed drawings, collages, artist's stamps, and postcards, often characterized by a playful, ironic, and subtly subversive engagement with everyday life and political realities. Rehfeldt’s practice, defined by its accessibility and emphasis on process over commodity, became a powerful testament to artistic autonomy and the enduring human desire for connection and creative freedom amidst political constraints.
